How to Turn Free Time into Long-Term Business Success

No matter who we are and what we do, we all have 168 hours each week. Of course, roughly one-third of that time is spent working and another third is spent sleeping. Free time makes up part of the remaining third, and it is up to each of us to decide how to spend it. Many of us devote significant time to hobbies. Some of us are focused on self-improvement. For others, continuing education is a wise choice. For those in the latter group, an online MBA program can be a smart move.

Benefits of MBA Coursework

Let’s first look at the habits of the most successful business leaders. Jayson Demers, founder and CEO of AudienceBloom, captured many of these habits in an article he wrote for Inc. He listed eight traits, and no fewer than three relate directly to what students will do in their free time when they are enrolled in a traditional or online MBA program: taking classes, reading and networking.

Your MBA classes will provide you with a solid foundation in business fundamentals. Some of the topics covered include marketing strategy, design thinking, supply chain management, global economics and project management. Learning more about these topics outside of your coursework can be a worthwhile way to spend your free time. It will give you a leg up on others who confine learning to the classroom.

Of course, you will spend some of your free time doing the required reading for your degree. And because you are in a program designed for today’s business professionals, the reading you do is often immediately applicable, while preparing you for future challenges.

With regard to networking, participating in an MBA program can be much more worthwhile than spending a Friday night at a local mixer. MBA students often work in teams to complete projects as well as offer one another feedback on important business topics. The relationships students make in an MBA program can bring huge benefits throughout their professional lives. For instance, contacts you make may call you when their companies have job openings.

How to Invest Your Free Time

Although the advantages of using these hours to further your career and earning potential is plain to see, few people choose to further their education. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, people on average spend less than a half hour a day pursuing educational activities. By contrast, they spend more than five hours each day on leisure and sports activities — including nearly three hours of television viewing. Time spent watching television could be devoted to pursuing their online MBA — an investment of time with a more substantial payoff than channel surfing.
