# Time-Saving Tips for Taking the GMAT

The GMAT is an admission requirement for most online MBA programs, and it is a long test. Many students struggle with time management while they’re taking it, so here are some GMAT test-taking tips to help you get through the test much more quickly.

The GMAT is a computer-based test, so you will not be able to write on the actual test. However, process of elimination is still an essential component of answering the questions accurately. Rather than listing the incorrect answers you’ve eliminated over and over, you can create a chart and populate it with the answers you’re eliminating each time.

A GMAT test-taking tip for the sentence correction questions in the verbal section is to group the answer choices based on similarities. For example, three of the five answer choices may start with “are” and the other two may start with “is.” If you know the correct term is “are,” then you can eliminate the answer choices with “is” without even reading them.

Students tend to have the most difficulty managing their time on the quantitative section. You are not allowed to use a calculator on the quantitative section, so you can avoid excess computation if you memorize basic mathematic operations, such as the following:

• Multiplication tables from 1 to 10.
• Exponential squares from 1 to 10.
• Raising 2 to the first through the tenth powers.
• Decimal forms.

Other strategies for saving time on the quantitative section include estimation, picking numbers and testing answer choices. Because the test is multiple choice, if the answers are far enough apart, you can often estimate instead of solving the problem fully. If there are answer choices with many variables, pick numbers and plug them into the equation until you find the solution.

The GMAT can be difficult to complete in the allotted time, but following these tips can help you finish with time to spare.
