GMAT Waiver Option for a Healthcare MBA

Earning a healthcare-focused Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree can help healthcare professionals advance their careers into administrative and executive level roles. But many healthcare professionals do not have the business school background or familiarity with typical graduate school exams. For instance, the most common industry standard test in the MBA admissions process is the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Yet the average healthcare professional would have had no reason to take the GMAT prior to considering an MBA.

Boise State University’s online MBA program with an Emphasis in Healthcare Leadership can be a good fit for working professionals in these circumstances. Along with test scores, the program’s admissions requirements place emphasis on education of all sorts and prior management experience. The test score admissions requirement also includes an alternative test option (the Graduate Record Examination, or GRE). And, often, the test score requirement is waived under certain conditions.

What Is the GMAT?

The GMAT exam was created by and is further developed and administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), which describes it as “designed to test skills that are highly important to business and management programs. It assesses analytical writing and problem-solving abilities, along with the data sufficiency, logic, and critical reasoning skills that are vital to real-world business and management success.”

The assessment is broken into four test sections: analytical writing, integrated reasoning, quantitative and verbal. GMAC uses proprietary algorithms to generate composite scores for test takers, weighting the difficulty of questions answered correctly as opposed to a simple correct versus incorrect score. This nuanced composite score is intended to give MBA program admissions officers a good idea of how well prospective students will perform in their MBA studies.

What Is the GRE?

The GRE is another test commonly taken by prospective graduate school students. The test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is intended to assess skills and competencies necessary for general graduate level study. The GRE is broken into three sections: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. Clearly, the GRE tests similar competencies to the GMAT. But the GRE is not developed specifically for and focused on graduate level business studies. For the Boise State online MBA program, scores from either the GMAT or the GRE are expected without preference to either.

What GMAT Waiver Options Are Offered by Boise State’s Healthcare MBA?

Boise State’s online healthcare MBA admissions requirements place value on a candidate’s education background in many disciplines, not just business studies. The program also focuses on managerial experience, past and present. Accordingly, all candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, yet that degree may be in any discipline. Candidates must also have at least two years of substantive, full-time management experience.

The degree program does recommend candidates to have scored at least 500 on the GMAT or 147/148 on the GRE to be a competitive applicant. Higher test scores are advisable to offset lower GPAs or lower work experience. In some cases, the test score requirement may be waived for applicants with more managerial experience or education:

  • Three years of management experience and an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0
  • Five years of management experience and an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75
  • A master’s or doctoral level degree and corresponding GPA of at least 3.0

Students who are unsure if they will qualify for the test score waiver are encouraged to speak with their Enrollment Specialist.

This program provides a unique path to a specialized healthcare MBA for working professionals in the field. With admissions requirements that welcome students from various industries and disciplines, Boise State’s online MBA in Healthcare Leadership can help make achieving educational and career advancement goals in healthcare leadership attainable and realistic.
